Welcome to the Doris Tracy Memorial Project Blog!

The Memorial is Gradually Taking Shape.
Presently, the art is in process, grants are being sought, and the general public are encouraged to send supportive contributions to the care of the Sangre De Cristo Center for Youth.  Mail contributions to the Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth at  129 Kansas Avenue, Walsenburg, CO 81089 and be sure to write that you are supporting the “Doris Tracy Memorial Fund”.
According to renowned Sculptor, Painter and Art Gallery Founder, Joan Hanley, “Ordinary people can have extraordinary lives if they just take advantage of opportunities.”  Former World War II WASP pilot and recently deceased Long-time La Veta figure, Doris Tracy lived an extraordinary life and Hanley plans to help memorialize this life with a significant work of public art.
Hanley, a seasoned artist is collaborating with the Sangre De Cristo Center for Youth (formerly the Huerfano County Youth Services) who will be providing assistance with fundraising support as well as some hands-on help via their CREW (Creative Righteous Educated Little Women) Program for Girls.
This project is “bringing the generations together” according to Hanley.  In complimenting Hanley’s artistic touch and the gracious hands-on efforts of the CREW Girls, the Molding will be in the capable hands of Karla Knight who worked on the Washington, D.C. Women’s Memorial and Casting will be done by The Art Casting Company in Loveland, Colorado.
“This is about positive role models for the future” according to Hanley, who plans to include in this project recognition for all Huerfano County women who have served in the Armed Forces.  Fittingly, the Sangre De Cristo Center for Youth provides area at-risk youth with the education, community service opportunities, and positive adult role modeling necessary to create a community of healthy, self-sufficient young adults.
